Relinquish a Cat to RMFR

Before surrendering a cat, please consider looking through the Humane Society of the United States' Article 'Need to find your pet a new home?' for alternatives to relinquishing a cat to a shelter.

Surrendering a pet to a shelter should be a last resort.

We understand sometimes unavoidable things happen and that keeping your cat(s) is not in the best interest of you or the cat(s). If you are wanting to surrender a cat to RMFR please fill out our relinquishment application, we will get back to you as soon as possible. Depending on the volume of submitted forms, it can take up to two weeks to hear back. Please make sure to list all pets being relinquished, all information you have on the cat(s), and any medical records. The more information, the better we can help.

If you found a stray please still fill out the relinquishment form with as much information as possible. You can also take the cat to any vet or shelter to have them scanned for a microchip and potentially alert their owner.

After reviewing this application we will reach out to you via email. Please note, RMFR is a limited intake shelter and all surrenders are dependent on shelter space availability and medical resources. As much as we want to help every cat, we do not have the staff or resources, and for the wellbeing of our current cats (& staff), we must have a capacity limit. Please see 'Relinquishment Resources' for other local resources in the event that we are unable to take your furry friend.

Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue does not require a fee to surrender an animal, but we do ask you to consider leaving a donation to support the continued care of your cat. The cost to care for and to re-home a pet can be quite substantial depending on the age and health of a pet. The average cost of care is $250-$300+ per pet.

Have any other questions? Send us an email at:

"Do you do walk-in surrenders?"

Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate walk in surrenders as we are a very limited intake shelter and only have intake teams on certain days.

"Can I receive updates or be notified when the cat(s) I surrendered are adopted?"

In most cases we are able to provide a notification when the cat is adopted. If you would like updates about your surrendered kitty please send us an email or let us know at time of relinquishment.

"Will bonded cats stay together?"

RMFR keeps bonded pairs together. The only time cats may be un-bonded is if they are having conflict or aggression towards each other and only after a careful review. We do not take un-bonding cats lightly.
